![]() I had vogtlands, bilsteins and H-sport sways and it was awesome. ![]() The audi can be made toi handle quite well though. Stock for stock the BMW drives and handles a bit better IMO. I had a B5 A4 1.8T quattro and did a lot of work on my ex's dads 330xi, both manual transmission. If you're looking for an AWD winter car, you're entering the time when AWD cars start commanding a premium, especially in Chicago. You *may* be able to find a B5 for that price in better condition, but the B5 chassis came out years before the E46 chassis did, so chances are you'll be able to find a B5 cheaper anyway, aside from the all-else-being-equal higher resale for BMWs. That being said, don't expect to pick up a car from either brand for $5k that doesn't need several more thousands of dollars and hours of labor to fix up. It is also far easier to work on, and possibly one of the easiest engines ever made to time. If going A4, I personally prefer the 1.8T it is more fuel efficient, and easier to start making (boosting) more power out of than the 2.8. The beauty (sarcasm) of buying a used car is that you never really know what previous owners have done to it. If maintenance, and preventive maintenance, is done on time and performed properly, either car is going to last a long time. Audis, much like BMWs, get a bad rap from people who moan when their lack of maintenance comes back to bite them, and bite them hard they're no more of a maintenance nightmare than a Bimmer.
